Dishwasher Not Cleaning Properly? Fix It

You notice it when you unload the bottom rack and find dried-on sauce still stuck to plates, cloudy glasses and bits of food left behind. If your dishwasher not cleaning properly has gone from occasional annoyance to a regular problem, the good news is that the cause is often something simple, and often it can be sorted without replacing the whole machine.

A dishwasher that washes poorly does not always have a major fault. More often, performance drops because water is not reaching the dishes properly, detergent is not dissolving as it should, or food debris is being recirculated during the cycle. The trick is to work through the likely causes in the right order, starting with the easiest checks before moving on to parts that may need cleaning or replacement.

Why a dishwasher is not cleaning properly

When a dishwasher is working as it should, it relies on a straightforward process. Clean water enters the machine, is heated to the right temperature, is mixed with detergent, and is then pumped through spray arms under pressure. Dirty water is filtered and drained away. If any part of that chain is interrupted, cleaning results suffer.

That means poor washing can point to several different issues. It could be a blocked filter, a spray arm clogged with limescale or food particles, low water pressure inside the machine, a problem with the heating element, or even a worn door seal affecting how the cycle runs. It can also be as simple as overloading baskets or using the wrong detergent for your local water.

The important point is this: poor cleaning does not automatically mean the dishwasher is finished. A targeted repair is often far cheaper than replacement, and it keeps a useful appliance in service for longer.

Start with the checks that cost nothing

Before assuming a component has failed, look at the way the dishwasher is being used. Loading matters more than many people realise. Large pans, chopping boards and tall plates can block the spray arms or prevent water from reaching cups and bowls tucked behind them. If the upper and lower arms cannot spin freely, even a perfectly healthy dishwasher will leave items dirty.

Detergent is another common culprit. Tablets that do not dissolve fully can leave residue and poor wash results, especially on shorter or cooler cycles. If you have switched brands recently, or if your machine is being run mainly on eco settings, it is worth testing a hotter programme with fresh detergent to see whether performance improves.

Water hardness also really affects things. In hard water areas, limescale can build up inside spray arms and internal components, reducing water flow over time. If glasses are coming out cloudy and dishes feel gritty, rinse aid and dishwasher salt levels are worth checking. A machine that has not had salt topped up for months may clean noticeably worse, even if all parts are functioning.

Check the filter and sump area

If there is one maintenance job that solves more dishwasher cleaning complaints than any other, it is cleaning the filter. Most dishwashers have a filter assembly at the base of the tub that catches food debris before it can be pumped back over the dishes. When it becomes blocked with grease, scraps and residue, water circulation drops and dirty particles can end up back on your crockery.

Remove the lower basket and take out the filter according to the appliance manual. Wash it thoroughly in warm water, using a soft brush if needed to clear stubborn debris. While the filter is out, inspect the sump area beneath it for broken glass, labels, bones or anything else that could obstruct the pump.

This is also a good time to check for unpleasant smells or standing water. If water is sitting at the bottom after a cycle, the issue may involve drainage as well as washing performance. A partially blocked drain pump or hose can leave dirty water in the machine, which rarely leads to properly clean dishes.

Inspect the spray arms carefully

Small blockages can make a big difference

Spray arms do the hard work of distributing water around the dishwasher. If the holes along the arms are blocked, water pressure drops and coverage becomes uneven. The result is usually obvious: some items come out clean, while others still have food on them.

Take out the spray arms if your model allows it and inspect each jet hole. Food particles, grease and limescale can block them surprisingly easily. Rinse them under the tap and use a toothpick or soft tool to clear any debris. Avoid forcing anything metal into the holes, as that can damage the plastic.

Look for cracks and wear

A spray arm can also split, warp or wear out over time. If it is cracked, water may escape in the wrong direction instead of being pushed through the nozzles at pressure. If it no longer spins freely, the wash pattern will be poor. In that case, cleaning alone will not solve the problem, and a replacement spray arm is often the sensible fix.

Make sure the dishwasher is heating properly

Hot water is essential for breaking down grease and helping detergent work effectively. If a dishwasher not cleaning properly is also leaving dishes wet, greasy or colder than expected at the end of the cycle, poor heating should be considered.

A failed heating element, thermostat or temperature sensor can all reduce wash quality. Sometimes the machine will still complete a programme, but because the water never reaches the correct temperature, plates and glasses come out dull and dirty rather than properly clean.

This is where the symptoms matter. If detergent tablets are left partly undissolved, greasy film remains on dishes and drying has also become weak, the fault may be linked to the heating system rather than the wash pump or spray arms. Some heating-related checks are best handled by someone confident with appliance testing, but identifying the likely cause helps you source the right part instead of guessing.

Consider water intake and circulation problems

A dishwasher needs enough water inside the tub to wash effectively. If the water inlet valve restricts or fails, the machine may fill with too little water. The pump then has less water to circulate, which means weaker spray and poorer results.

You might hear the machine running but notice that the wash sounds quieter or less forceful than it used to. In some cases, dishes on the top rack suffer first because there is not enough pressure to push water where it needs to go.

Circulation pump issues can produce similar symptoms. If the pump wears, becomes obstructed, or fails, it may not generate the pressure needed for proper washing. This is less of a quick clean-and-go fix than a blocked filter, but it is still often a repairable fault. Replacing a faulty pump can restore performance at a fraction of the cost of a new dishwasher.

Do not ignore the detergent dispenser

If the detergent dispenser flap is not opening properly, the dishwasher can run most of the cycle without releasing the detergent at the right time. That leaves dishes looking as though they have had a rinse rather than a proper wash.

Check for obvious obstructions first. A large tray or plate placed too close to the dispenser can stop it opening fully. If loading is not the problem, inspect the dispenser for sticky residue, broken hinges or signs of wear. A damaged dispenser assembly is a straightforward example of a part that can cause poor cleaning while the rest of the appliance is still perfectly serviceable.

When replacing a part makes sense

There is a point where cleaning and maintenance stop being enough. If you have cleared the filters, checked the spray arms, confirmed the detergent is suitable and the loading is correct, yet the wash results remain poor, a worn or faulty component becomes more likely.

Common parts linked to poor dishwasher cleaning include spray arms, filters, drain pumps, circulation pumps, heating elements, thermostats, temperature sensors, inlet valves and detergent dispensers. The key is compatibility. Dishwasher parts vary by brand, model and production version, so model-number matching matters. Buying a part that looks similar is not the same as buying the correct one.

For many households, this stage is the point where repair becomes the smart option. Replacing one failed component is usually much cheaper than replacing the entire appliance, especially if the dishwasher is otherwise reliable and fits your kitchen properly. It is also the more sustainable choice. Keeping a machine in use for a few more years reduces waste and avoids the cost and disruption of starting again.

A sensible approach to diagnosis

If you want the fastest route to a fix, treat the symptom and the machine history together. Has cleaning performance faded gradually? Think limescale, filters, spray arms or water flow restrictions. Has it changed suddenly? A dispenser, pump, heater or valve fault becomes more likely. Is only one rack affected? Focus on spray arm movement, loading and water distribution.

For UK households in hard water areas, routine maintenance makes a bigger difference than many people expect. Salt, rinse aid and regular filter cleaning are essential. They are part of keeping the machine washing properly over time.

If you do need a replacement component, working from the model number gives you the best chance of getting the right fit first time. That is precisely why suppliers such as Electro Spares focus on model-based part matching and practical repair guidance rather than pushing people straight towards replacement.

A dishwasher that stops cleaning well is frustrating, but it is rarely a reason to give up on the appliance straight away. Often, a careful clean, a simple adjustment or the right spare part is all it takes to get it back to doing the job properly.
