How to Change a Fridge Light Bulb at Home

A fridge light that has gone out is easy to ignore until you are searching for food at the back of a dark shelf. Fortunately, to change a fridge light bulb is usually a quick, low-cost repair that most people can handle themselves. The key is to fit the correct appliance-rated bulb and check whether it is actually the cause of the problem before ordering a replacement.

A working interior light is more than a convenience. It helps you spot spills, keep food organised and check what needs using up before it goes to waste. Replacing one small part can keep a trusted appliance practical for years longer, without the unnecessary cost of replacing it.

Before you change a fridge light bulb

Start by checking the simple things. Open the fridge door fully and look for a lamp cover or light housing, usually near the top of the fridge compartment. On some models, the bulb sits behind a clear plastic diffuser; on others, it is visible in a small recess.

Before touching the fitting, disconnect the fridge from the mains. Pull out the plug where it is accessible. If the appliance is hard-wired or you cannot reach the socket safely, switch off the relevant circuit at the consumer unit. This removes the risk of electric shock and prevents the compressor from starting while you are working.

If the light was working recently, allow the bulb to cool first. Appliance bulbs can become surprisingly hot in a small enclosed housing. Dry your hands and make sure the floor around the fridge is not wet.

Remove the light cover carefully

Look closely at the lamp cover before trying to remove it. It may slide sideways, pull forward, unclip from one edge or be secured with a small screw. If it has clips, press them gently rather than levering the cover aggressively. A cracked cover can allow moisture into the fitting and may leave the bulb exposed.

Keep the cover and any screw somewhere safe. If the housing is close to a shelf, remove the shelf first if the adjustment gives you room to work without twisting the plastic.

Take out the old bulb

Once the bulb is exposed, turn it anti-clockwise to unscrew it. Do not use excessive force. If it feels stuck, use a dry cloth for grip and turn steadily. Never use pliers on a glass bulb.

If the bulb has broken, keep the fridge disconnected. Choosing the right fridge bulb

A fridge bulb is not always the same as an ordinary household bulb. The correct replacement needs to cope with frequent switching, a cool environment and an enclosed lamp cover. Appliance-specific bulbs are designed for this job and are usually the sensible choice.

An LED fridge bulb can be a sensible upgrade if it is explicitly suitable for refrigeration appliances and matches the required fitting. LEDs use less electricity and generally last longer than filament bulbs. The trade-off is compatibility: some LED bulbs are too large for the cover, may not work correctly with certain door switches, or are not approved for enclosed fridge housings.

Check these details against the old bulb, appliance manual or model number before ordering:

  • cap or fitting type, such as E14 SES or bayonet
  • maximum wattage shown on the fridge light housing
  • bulb shape and physical size, especially where the cover is compact
  • appliance suitability, including use in enclosed refrigerator fittings

The new bulb still does not work

With the fridge connected again, press and release the door switch a few times.
